What is a Diabetic foot screening?

A diabetic foot screening session is a vital check-up to assess your risk of foot complications, and NICE recommends it at least once a year for people for those classified as pre-diabetic, in remission or low risk. Screening is recommended more frequently for those in the moderate to high risk categories.

The Paula Carr Trust recommend: If you have diabetes your feet need special attention. This is because diabetes can reduce the supply of blood to your feet and cause a loss of feeling. The medical term for this is sensory neuropathy. You may not notice that you have lost the feeling in your feet so there is risk that a minor injury could develop into serious complications, including amputation due to gangrene. You should always see your doctor if you notice any signs of redness, pain, build up of hard skin or changes in the shape of your foot.

You should get your feet checked at least once a year by a doctor, nurse or podiatrist. This vital screening service is fully funded by the Paula carr trust and our expert team of podiatrists share their findings with your GP directly and can also share a copy with you on request.

What can I expect at a foot screening appointment?

A diabetic foot screening at East Kent Foot Care checks for early signs of nerve damage and poor circulation that could lead to serious foot complications. It helps identify your risk level and guides preventative care to protect foot health.

What is tested during a diabetic foot screening?

Artery health and circulation – pulses and blood flow are assessed to detect reduced perfusion.

Motor neuropathic changes – muscle strength, foot shape, and joint movement are examined for signs of imbalance or deformity.

Sensory neuropathic changes – a monofilament is used to test protective sensation and detect nerve damage.

Autonomic changes – if sensation is intact, a Neuropad may be used to assess sweat gland function and skin moisture regulation.
