What is a fungal infection?

Fungal skin and nail infections are common conditions caused by microscopic organisms that thrive in warm, moist environments. On the skin, they often appear as red, itchy, flaky patches—commonly known as athlete’s foot when affecting the feet. Fungal nail infections can cause thickening, discoloration, brittleness, and sometimes pain or separation of the nail from the nail bed. These infections can spread through direct contact or shared surfaces like showers, gyms, or swimming pools. While not usually serious, they can be persistent and may require topical or oral antifungal treatments to fully resolve. Early diagnosis and treatment help prevent spread and discomfort.

Fungal Infection Symptoms:

Fungal Skin Infection (e.g. Athlete’s Foot):

  • Itchy, burning, or stinging sensation between the toes or on the soles
  • Red, flaky, or peeling skin—often in a moccasin-like pattern
  • Cracked or blistered areas that may ooze or crust
  • Unpleasant odour, especially in warm, damp conditions
  • Thickened or rough patches that don’t improve with moisturiser

Fungal Nail Infection (Onychomycosis):

  • Discolouration of the nail—often yellow, white, or brown
  • Thickened, brittle, or crumbly nail texture
  • Nail lifting or separating from the nail bed
  • Distorted nail shape or surface
